Pep Guardiola has confidently stated that Manchester City have solidified their status as perennial contenders for Champions League glory after reaching the quarter-finals for a seventh consecutive season. City's 3-1 victory over FC Copenhagen at the Etihad completed a 6-2 aggregate triumph, with goals from Manuel Akanji and Julian Alvarez quickly ending the tie before Erling Haaland added another.
City, who secured their first European title last season, are now considered favorites for the competition, ahead of traditional giants like Real Madrid and Bayern Munich. Guardiola highlighted City's impressive record, noting that they have not lost a Champions League game at the Etihad since 2018 and are the first team in the competition's history to score three or more goals in nine consecutive home games.
Guardiola praised the club's belief in the process, mentioning that when he arrived, there was skepticism due to City's lack of European pedigree compared to clubs in Spain or Germany. However, with time and support from the hierarchy, Guardiola believes City have developed into a team that believes in their ability to win the Champions League.
City have been in excellent form, winning 18 and drawing two of their last 20 games in all competitions. They are now the team to beat as the draw for the Champions League quarter-finals and semi-finals approaches on March 15.
