Ivory Coast's attempt to secure Herve Renard on loan from the France women's team for the remainder of the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) has hit a significant roadblock.
Following their 4-0 defeat to Equatorial Guinea in the final Group A game on Monday, Ivory Coast, the host nation for the 2023 AFCON, terminated the contract of head coach Jean-Louis Gasset.
The Elephants aimed to loan Renard until the conclusion of the ongoing AFCON after failing to secure automatic qualification for the Round of 16. Despite initially struggling, they eventually secured a place as one of the four best third-place finishers, thanks to Morocco's victory over Zambia.
Interim coach Emerse Faé is likely to remain in charge for the upcoming match against defending champion Senegal in Yamoussoukro on Monday.
Renard, who led Ivory Coast to their second AFCON title in 2015, is the preferred choice to replace Gasset until the end of the tournament. However, talks with the French federation for a potential loan deal broke down without agreement on Thursday, as reported by ESPN.
"I'd have loved it, but fate chose otherwise," Renard expressed.
Renard, the former Saudi Arabia manager currently coaching the France women's national team, has a contract with Les Bleues that extends until August 2024. Before leading Ivory Coast to their second Africa Cup of Nations title in 2015, Renard guided Zambia to victory in the 2012 AFCON. He also achieved a notable World Cup victory over Argentina while managing Saudi Arabia before taking on the role with the France women's team in 2023.
