Jordan Henderson has clarified that financial considerations played no role in his decision to join Ajax instead of making a return to the Premier League. The move was finalized after Al Ettifaq, his Saudi Arabian club, agreed to terminate his three-year contract just six months into the agreement.
While reports suggested potential tax implications on his earnings in Saudi Arabia if he returned to the Premier League, Henderson insisted that choosing Ajax was solely a sporting decision. He emphasized, "Don't believe what you read in the press; it had nothing to do with anything but football."
Speaking about his move to Ajax, Henderson stated, "I felt it was the perfect opportunity to come to such a huge club and showcase what I've tried to do my whole life - to dedicate myself to football." He expressed gratitude for the warm welcome and pledged to give his all over the next two-and-a-half years to contribute to the success of the club.
Addressing rumors about his desire for more competitive football and a spot in England's Euro squad, Henderson said, "I'm in contact with Gareth [Southgate] regularly, as I have been for many years, and that hasn't changed. He understands the situation."
Henderson also acknowledged the positive experiences and lessons learned during his time in Saudi Arabia, despite the challenges. When asked about any regrets regarding the move, he emphasized the importance of learning from experiences and expressed respect for the Saudi Pro League and Al Ettifaq.
Regarding the criticism of his move to a country where same-sex relationships are illegal, Henderson reiterated his apology to those who may have been offended. He stated, "If anyone was offended or feels as though I upset them, that's on me. It was never my intention." Henderson emphasized that his beliefs remain unchanged, and he is focused on moving forward and performing at his best for Ajax.
Jurgen Klopp, Henderson's former manager at Liverpool, defended the midfielder and questioned the criticism surrounding his decisions. Klopp expressed happiness for Henderson, stating that his well-being and happiness are the most important factors. Klopp characterized Henderson's experience in Saudi Arabia as "100 per cent interesting" and praised Ajax as a "sensational club."
