A 38-year-old mother of eleven, Chinyere Chukwu, was apprehended in Anambra State for attempting to sell two of her sons for N1.8 million. The arrest was made by the Anambra State Women and Social Welfare Commissioner, Hon Ify Obinabo, who posed as a buyer after receiving information about the transaction.
During questioning at the Prof Dora Akunyili Women Development Center in Awka, Chinyere explained that she and her 17-year-old daughter, Joy Chukwu, decided to sell two of her sons due to economic hardship. With eleven children to care for, she believed selling two of them would provide the necessary funds to support the others.
Chinyere disclosed that she pegged the price of each boy at one million naira but eventually agreed to sell them for a total of 1.8 million naira after bargaining with the Commissioner. She admitted that her interest in the business grew after witnessing her neighbor successfully sell one of her own children, marking her first attempt at such transactions.
The suspect, originally from Ozubulu but residing in Okija, revealed that she had only two children with her late husband and acquired the remaining nine after his demise. Her teenage daughter, the eldest among the siblings, shared that the plan was to use the proceeds for her higher education.
The Women Affairs commissioner ordered that the remaining children be taken into the state government's custody for proper care, while the neighbor involved in the business would also be apprehended. She further directed that after the neighbor's arrest, contact tracing of the sold child would be initiated to ensure the child's recovery.
