Super Eagles assistant coach, Finidi George, attributed the team's victory over Cote d’Ivoire on Thursday, January 18, at the ongoing Africa Cup of Nations to a tactical switch in formation. Captain Troost-Ekong scored the decisive goal through a penalty kick, capitalizing on a foul by Ousmane Diomande on Victor Osimhen after a VAR check at the Alassane Outtara Stadium in Abidjan.
Finidi, speaking to the News Agency of Nigeria after the match, emphasized the importance of the players adhering to tactical instructions in a highly strategic game against the hosts. The assistant coach highlighted the team's decision to switch formation, focusing on defensive resilience and utilizing counter-attacks from the flanks.
Acknowledging the quality of the Cote d’Ivoire squad in ball possession, Finidi noted the team's defensive approach to close spaces and execute effective counter-attacks. Despite the victory, he stressed the need for the squad to remain focused and not get carried away, emphasizing the importance of continued hard work.
Looking ahead to their next match against Guinea-Bissau on Monday, Finidi emphasized the team's commitment to maintaining their composure and giving their best effort. The Super Eagles, currently second in Group A, will face Guinea-Bissau at the Stade Félix Houphouët Boigny in Abidjan for their third and final Group A match at 5 pm.
