Bayer Leverkusen secured a hard-fought 2-1 victory over Mainz 05, extending their unbeaten streak to 33 games across all competitions and setting a new Bundesliga record. Despite lacking their usual efficiency in attack and allowing Mainz opportunities, Leverkusen capitalized on a mistake by Mainz keeper Robin Zentner to claim the win.
The Bundesliga leaders took an early lead with Granit Xhaka's stunning strike from 20 meters in the third minute. However, Mainz quickly responded with Dominik Kohr's diving header to level the score.
Despite dominating possession, Leverkusen struggled to break down Mainz's defense, with Zentner making several crucial saves. Leverkusen eventually reclaimed the lead in the 68th minute when Zentner failed to hold onto a weak shot from Robert Andrich.
Mainz's task was made even harder when Jessic Ngankam was sent off, reducing them to 10 men. Despite the win, Leverkusen's scorer Andrich admitted that they did not play well, attributing the victory to luck. He acknowledged that they were too impatient and imprecise but emphasized the importance of securing three points.
