Nigerian Afrobeats stars, including Burna Boy, Davido, Tems, Ayra Starr, Olamide, and Asake, faced disappointment at the 66th Grammy Awards. Despite 10 nominations across five categories, the Nigerian contingent failed to secure any wins.
The inaugural 'Best African Music Performance' trophy went to South African singer Tyla for her 2023 track, "Water," beating out the Nigerian nominees.
In the 'Best Global Album' category, Burna Boy and Davido lost to world fusion band Shakti, whose album "This Moment" claimed the prize over Burna Boy's "I Told Them" and Davido's "Timeless," among others.
The hopes of Burna Boy and Davido were further dashed in the 'Best Global Music Performance' category, where Indian composer Zakir Hussain won for the track "Pashto" featuring Bela Fleck and Edger Meyer.
Despite being nominated for four awards, Burna Boy went home empty-handed as Lil Durk's collaboration with J Cole, "All My Life," won the Grammy for Best Melodic Rap, defeating Burna Boy's nominated track "Sittin' on Top of The World" with 21 Savage.
Tems, who won her first Grammy last year, faced disappointment in the 'Song Written for Visual Media' category. Her contribution to the Black Panther theme song, "Lift Me Up," performed by Rihanna, lost to Billie Eilish's "What Was I Made For" for the 2023 fantasy drama "Barbie."
