The Ivorian Football Federation has appointed Emerse Fae as the Elephants' coach on a permanent basis following their victory in the AFCON 2023 tournament. Fae had initially taken over on an interim basis after Jean-Louis Gasset's departure during the group stage of the finals.
Before Fae's interim appointment, Ivory Coast had suffered two defeats, including a record 4-0 loss at home to Equatorial Guinea. However, under Fae's guidance, the team experienced a remarkable turnaround in form during the knockout stages of the tournament.
The Elephants secured their place in the quarter-finals as the last of the four best third-placed teams and went on to defeat Senegal on penalties, overcome Mali with 10 men in extra time, beat DR Congo in the semi-finals, and eventually claim the title by defeating Nigeria 2-1 in the final.
Idriss Diallo, the president of the Ivorian Football Federation, confirmed Fae's appointment as the head coach on Monday. However, he did not disclose the length of Fae’s contract.
"Emerse was until now interim coach and has just been confirmed as a full coach," Diallo stated.
