Former Barcelona Star Dani Alves Claims Financial Struggles Amid Rape Trial

Former Barcelona defender Dani Alves is facing financial challenges as he stands trial in Spain accused of raping a woman in a nightclub.

The 40-year-old footballer, who has spent the past year in prison awaiting trial, is reportedly broke, with a negative bank balance of £17,000. His lawyer revealed that Alves also has a legal embargo on another £42,795 worth of assets.

Alves, who could face up to 12 years in prison if found guilty, is accused of assaulting a woman in a Barcelona nightclub in 2022. He may also be ordered to pay damages of £128,000 to his accuser.

Despite once having a fortune of £47 million, Alves' financial situation has deteriorated. His last major contract with UNAM Pumas reportedly earned him over £256,840 per month, and he earned approximately £8.6 million annually at Barcelona.

In addition to his football career, Alves has ventured into various businesses, including a representation agency and a fashion brand. However, he faced a £4 million claim from UNAM Pumas for breach of contract after his arrest.

The trial, which began with testimony from the accuser, is expected to conclude soon. Alves denies any wrongdoing but admits to cheating on his wife with the accuser, claiming the encounter was consensual. If convicted, state prosecutors seek a nine-year prison sentence for the former football star.
