American rapper and activist, Killer Mike, has addressed his recent arrest at the Grammy Awards ceremony, where he swept three major rap categories.
The Los Angeles Police Department reported that the 48-year-old, whose real name is Michael Render, was arrested in connection with a physical altercation inside the event venue on Sunday. He was booked on a misdemeanor battery charge but was later released and is scheduled to appear in court later this month.
In his first comments after his release, Killer Mike appeared on an Atlanta-based radio show, where he downplayed the incident, saying, "We hit a speed bump and then we head back to the party, man." He emphasized that despite the setback, they continued to celebrate their wins throughout the night.
Attributing the incident to "overzealous security," Killer Mike expressed his frustration with the situation. Video footage from the scene showed him being escorted out of the Crypto.com arena in downtown Los Angeles by police officers shortly before the prime-time Grammys broadcast began.
Prior to his arrest, Killer Mike swept all three awards for which he had been nominated. His song "Scientists & Engineers," featuring André 3000, Future, and Eryn Allen Kane, won awards for Best Rap Song and Best Rap Performance, while his album "Michael" secured the award for Best Rap Album.
Reflecting on his wins, Killer Mike expressed gratitude and defiance, stating, "You cannot tell me that you get too old, you can't tell me it's too late, you can't tell me dreams don't come true!" These Grammy wins marked a significant milestone for the artist, as they were his first solo awards, despite previously winning a Grammy in 2003 for a song he made with Outkast.
Throughout his career, Killer Mike has been outspoken about issues affecting black Americans, including police brutality and systemic racism, using his platform to advocate for social change.
