Newcastle United's sporting director, Dan Ashworth, has expressed his desire to join Manchester United, prompting his placement on gardening leave by Newcastle. Manchester United are reportedly interested in Ashworth as part of their club overhaul inspired by Ineos, but formal talks between the clubs have not yet commenced.
Ashworth is currently under contract with Newcastle, which prevents him from working for another club until 2025 unless compensation is agreed. Newcastle is considering asking Manchester United for a fee exceeding £10 million for Ashworth's services, but Manchester United is adamant about not being held to ransom.
Ashworth is highly regarded in the sporting director role, although there have been criticisms from St James' Park regarding his involvement in the signing of Italy midfielder Sandro Tonali for £55 million from AC Milan in July. Tonali has since been banned for 10 months for breaching gambling regulations in Italy, leaving him unable to play until August after making only 12 appearances for Newcastle.
Ineos, who are set to confirm their 25% ownership of Manchester United this week, are reportedly interested in acquiring Ashworth. Ashworth is said to be keen on the move to Old Trafford, having developed a relationship with Ineos head of sport Sir Dave Brailsford during his time at the Football Association (FA).
Ashworth was instrumental in England's youth success in 2017, when they won both the Under-17 and Under-20 World Cups. He also played a key role in Brighton's progress in the Premier League, helping appoint Graham Potter as manager after Chris Hughton was sacked.
After leaving Brighton, Ashworth joined Newcastle in 2022.
