Nigeria's Super Falcons faced a tough challenge in their 2024 Olympic qualifiers first-leg fixture against Cameroon, resulting in a goalless draw at the Reunification Stadium in Douala. The Falcons, led by coach Randy Waldrum, fielded a strong team including Asisat Oshoala, Ashleigh Plumptre, and Rasheedat Ajibade.
Cameroon started strongly, utilizing their home advantage to press the Super Falcons. They created a promising chance in the 11th minute but failed to capitalize. Nigeria had their own chances, with Toni Payne missing a key opportunity to set up Oshoala in the box.
Despite Cameroon's dominance in possession, Nigeria's goalkeeper Nnadozie made some crucial saves, including a spectacular effort to deny Cameroon a goal from a volley. The first half ended without either team finding the back of the net.
In the second half, Nigeria made changes, bringing in Jennifer Echigini and Esther Okoronkwo. Cameroon continued to threaten, but Nnadozie's alertness kept them at bay. Nigeria appeared to have taken the lead through Okoronkwo's header, but the goal was disallowed for offside.
Both teams had chances to score, but neither could break the deadlock, resulting in a goalless draw. The stage is now set for an exciting second leg in Abuja next Monday.
