Former Manchester United coach, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, has shared his thoughts on the disappointing end to Cristiano Ronaldo's second stint at the club. Ronaldo, who returned to United amid much fanfare, faced a tumultuous period under Solskjaer's successor, Erik ten Hag, before departing for Al Nassr.
Solskjaer expressed regret over how things unfolded, particularly after Ronaldo's successful return in 2021. "Cristiano wanted to leave Juventus, but we didn't think it was possible to bring him back. We had built a squad without Cristiano," Solskjaer explained. "And then when this opportunity came, I think everyone in the world thought it was going to be fantastic."
Despite the initial excitement, Ronaldo's departure turned sour, with controversies surrounding his relationship with the club and Ten Hag. Solskjaer praised Ronaldo's professionalism but acknowledged that things didn't work out as expected.
"I love Cristiano's professional attitude. But it didn't work out for him. It didn't work out for me. It didn't work out for the team, unfortunately," Solskjaer reflected. "But at that moment, it was the right decision to welcome him back to Old Trafford. That's life. We made a decision."
Solskjaer's departure from United in November 2021 marked the beginning of a turbulent period for the club and Ronaldo. Despite the disappointing end, Solskjaer still believes that bringing Ronaldo back was the right move. "So, unfortunately, after I left, it turned sour with Cristiano. It was sad to see from the outside," Solskjaer concluded.
