Quincy Promes Sentenced to Six Years in Prison for Drug Trafficking

Quincy Promes has been sentenced to six years in prison for drug trafficking, as reported by Dutch media on Wednesday.

The former Netherlands and Ajax Amsterdam player was sentenced in absentia by an Amsterdam court for smuggling at least 1,350 kilograms (2,976 pounds) of cocaine in 2020 through the port of Antwerp in Belgium.

According to public broadcaster NOS, telephone taps revealed that Promes was directly involved in cocaine trafficking, as cited in court documents.

Another suspect received the same sentence.

Promes, 32, currently plays for Russian football club Spartak Moscow.

Although he denied the charges, the court issued an arrest warrant against Promes, who previously played for Dutch powerhouse Ajax and Sevilla in Spain.

Primarily playing on the left flank, Promes scored 114 goals in 235 matches for Spartak Moscow in two different stints, winning the Russian championship with the club in 2017.

Promes also represented the Netherlands, scoring seven goals in 50 international appearances from 2014 to 2021, including during EURO 2020.
