Indian Gangster-Turned-Politician Mukhtar Ansari Dies Amid Controversy

Mukhtar Ansari, a notorious gangster who transitioned into politics and served as a lawmaker in the northern Indian state of Uttar Pradesh, has passed away at the age of 63. Ansari, a five-time lawmaker, had been in jail since 2005 and had more than 60 criminal cases against him, including 15 murder charges.

His death, attributed to cardiac arrest, has sparked controversy, with his family alleging that he was given a "poisonous substance" in jail. According to Ansari's brother, he had been poisoned before and had recently complained of being given poison on multiple occasions.

Ansari's health had deteriorated after a fall in the washroom, leading to his hospitalization. Despite receiving medical treatment, he passed away, prompting Uttar Pradesh police to issue curfew orders and conduct flag marches in certain areas to maintain order.

Ansari's political career was marred by controversy and criminal charges. He won his first state election in 1996 and remained a lawmaker until 2022. In April 2023, he was convicted for the murder of a lawmaker from the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and sentenced to 10 years in prison. He had also received a life sentence earlier this month for a 1990 case involving fake arms licenses.

His death has raised questions about the circumstances leading to his demise, with his son claiming that he was not informed about his father's deteriorating health and was denied access to him in his final days. Ansari's post-mortem examination is scheduled for Friday to determine the exact cause of death.
