Man Pleads Guilty to Murder After Concealing Lover's Body in Concrete

Juan Tejedor Baron, 25, pleaded guilty to second-degree murder on Monday, about two years after the body of his lover, Gary Ruby, 73, was found encased in concrete in a bathtub in Hawaii's Hawaii Loa Ridge neighborhood.

As part of a plea deal, prosecutors will not seek a sentence of life without parole. Instead, they will recommend a minimum term of 20 years to the Hawaii Paroling Authority.

Baron killed Ruby, poured cement over his body, and planned to take ownership of Ruby's car and home. Ruby's body was discovered in March 2022 after his brother reported him missing. Police found that Baron had covered the cement with coffee grounds to mask the smell.

Baron was arrested in Anaheim, California, after being found in a crawl space at the back of a Mexico-bound bus. He is considered to have overstayed a visa and, if granted parole, will be taken into custody by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement for removal proceedings. Baron is from Colombia.

Despite Baron's desire to take responsibility, his lawyers had discovered evidence of possible prosecutorial misconduct in the case, according to defense attorney Kyle Dowd.
