Naira Marley's Trial Stalled as Court Awaits Approval for Continuation

The criminal trial of Nigerian singer Azeez Fashola, popularly known as Naira Marley, hit a snag as the Federal High Court in Lagos awaits approval for the continuation of the case.

The prosecutor, Mrs. Bilikisu Buhari, informed Justice Isaac Dipeolu that an application for fiat to allow the former judge to proceed with the trial is pending before the Chief Judge of the court since December 8, 2023.

Naira Marley is facing charges of cybercrime, brought by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) on May 14, 2019. He had pleaded not guilty and was granted bail by Justice Nicholas Oweibo. However, due to Justice Oweibo's transfer out of the Lagos division, the case was transferred to Justice Dipeolu.

During the first appearance before Justice Dipeolu, Buhari represented the prosecution, and Mr. V.C Maduagwu appeared for the defendant. The court adjourned the case until May 30 for a report on the pending application for fiat.

The EFCC accuses Naira Marley of using different Access Bank ATM cards to defraud victims between November 26, 2018, and December 11, 2018, as well as May 10, 2019. The charges contravene the provisions of the Cybercrime (Prohibition) Prevention Act, 2015.
