Quincy Promes, Former Dutch Footballer, Re-Arrested in Dubai as a Fugitive from the Netherlands

Dutch authorities have announced the re-arrest of Quincy Promes, the former Dutch national football player, in Dubai. He is considered a fugitive in the Netherlands following a drug trafficking conviction in February. Promes was detained based on an urgent Interpol bulletin issued by the Netherlands, alerting other countries of his wanted status. The Netherlands intends to request his extradition.

Promes was initially arrested in late February in connection with a hit-and-run car crash. He was apprehended at Dubai airport while attempting to leave the United Arab Emirates. Following his arrest, Dutch authorities announced their intention to discuss the possibility of extradition. However, Promes was later released from jail pending further legal proceedings.

The 32-year-old footballer was taken back into custody "after constructive cooperation between the authorities in the United Arab Emirates (UAE) and the Netherlands," according to the Dutch Public Prosecution Service (OM). The arrest was made based on a Red Notice issued by the Netherlands.

After his release, Promes reportedly shared photos and videos on social media, showcasing his freedom in Dubai's nightlife and displaying a lack of regard for his criminal cases in the Netherlands.

"The arrested man was reportedly staying in luxury in Dubai according to various media reports. However, he has been taken into custody thanks to the efforts of the authorities in both countries," Dutch prosecutors said. The OM stated it would not disclose more information to protect an ongoing investigation.

Promes was previously arrested in December 2020 for allegedly stabbing his cousin at a family gathering. He left Amsterdam football club Ajax while awaiting trial and was signed by Spartak Moscow. He was convicted and sentenced to 1.5 years in prison last June, but plans to appeal the case.

In a separate case, prosecutors accused him of importing 1,362 kilograms of cocaine, resulting in a six-year prison sentence in February.

Promes arrived in Dubai in January to train with Spartak Moscow. The Netherlands then notified Interpol of his status, leading to his re-arrest in Dubai.

The Netherlands and the UAE signed an extradition treaty in 2021, which came into effect on August 1.
