Desiree Ellis, head coach of the South Africa senior women’s national team, has called on her players to deliver their best performance to defeat Nigeria’s Super Falcons in the Paris 2024 Olympic playoffs.
South Africa, the reigning WAFCON champions, will clash with the Falcons in a highly anticipated fourth-round CAF Women’s Olympic qualifier next month. The winner over two legs will secure a spot in Group C at the Paris Games.
Banyana Banyana will kick off the playoffs by traveling to Abuja for the first leg scheduled for 5 April. They will then host the nine-time African champions at Loftus Versfeld in Pretoria on 9 April 2024.
The team assembled for camp in Pretoria on Monday, 25 March, with their first official training session taking place on Tuesday.
Ellis expressed satisfaction with her team's performance after the initial training session but emphasized the need for careful selection of the final squad.
"We still have a couple of days before the final squad announcement, so I have to make sure that I get the combinations right," Ellis stated. "It won’t be an easy game against Nigeria. They have shown their quality over a period of time and they are still a quality team, so we have to be at our absolute best."
She highlighted the importance of finding the right blend of youth and experience in the squad to tackle the Falcons effectively.
