Zimbabwean Police Officers Arrested for Allegedly Collaborating with Robber

Three Zimbabwean police officers, Albert Machona (42), Charles Musiiwa (33), and Tanyaradzwa Mhondiwa (30), have been arrested and brought before the Mutare Magistrates’ Court on charges of collaborating and sharing loot with an armed robber.

The officers allegedly received a distress call from the public on the evening of February 28, 2024, reporting that a robber, Nyasha Foster, had been apprehended after stealing US$60,000 from a resident in Morningside, Mutare. Upon arriving at the scene, the officers took Foster to the police station but instead of treating him as a suspect, they classified him as an informant and released him.

Later, the officers falsely informed the victim of the robbery, who was admitted at Ireland Private Hospital, that only US$26,000 had been recovered. They then handed over this reduced amount to the complainant. However, the victim became suspicious and alerted the authorities, leading to the arrest of the officers.

The accused officers have been remanded in custody pending a court appearance scheduled for March 8, 2024, for their bail ruling. Nyasha Foster has also been rearrested on charges related to the robbery, with his court appearance set for March 13, 2024.
