Boxing promoter Eddie Hearn has officially announced that a long-awaited clash between heavyweight champions Anthony Joshua and Tyson Fury is on the horizon. However, Hearn emphasized that Fury must first defeat Oleksandr Usyk to secure the showdown.
During an interview with Piers Morgan, Hearn confirmed the much-anticipated Battle of Britain bout, which has been a topic of discussion for some time. Joshua, fresh off a victory over former UFC champion Francis Ngannou, is reportedly awaiting the announcement of his next opponent.
"With the darts Championship happening in December and January, I'm confident Fury vs. AJ will happen this year," Hearn stated.
Previously, both Joshua and Fury had signed off on a fight, but negotiations between their camps collapsed, leading Fury to face Deontay Wilder instead.
Usyk, who surprised the boxing world by defeating Joshua twice, now holds Joshua's former championship belts.
"Everybody wants to see this fight, and on August 12, Anthony Joshua will fight Dillian Whyte. After that, he will face Deontay Wilder in Saudi Arabia, and then, it has to be Tyson Fury," Hearn affirmed.
Fury's decision to turn down the Usyk fight, which would have been for the undisputed heavyweight championship, has raised eyebrows. Hearn suggested that Fury's motivations lie primarily in financial gain.
For Fury to cement his legacy as a true boxing great, Hearn believes he must defeat both Usyk and Joshua, stating, "He has to beat Usyk and he has to beat Anthony Joshua, particularly Usyk."
