Edo State Governor Increases Minimum Wage to N70,000

Governor Godwin Obaseki of Edo State has announced an increase in the minimum wage for workers in the state from N40,000 to N70,000, effective from May 1, 2024. The governor cited the economic situation in the country as the reason behind the wage hike. He made this announcement during the inauguration of the newly-built ultramodern Labour House Secretariat Complex in Benin City, which was named after former governor of the state and ex-President of the Nigeria Labour Congress, Adams Oshiomhole.

The announcement was met with celebration among the workers, with Odion Olaye, the chairman of the Edo State chapter of the NLC, commending the governor for being workers-friendly since assuming office. Olaye praised the governor for the wage increase, noting that it would greatly benefit the workers, especially considering the high cost of living.

Governor Obaseki also lauded the labour union for maintaining a cordial relationship with the state government, which has led to peace and industrial harmony in Edo State. He acknowledged the challenges faced by workers due to the economic situation in Nigeria, including devaluation, high food prices, and inflation, which have eroded the value of the current minimum wage.

While Obaseki expressed his belief in the need to adjust the minimum wage in Nigeria, he emphasized the importance of a central, cohesive approach to determining the minimum wage nationwide. He assured workers that the state government would make the necessary adjustments if the Federal Government imposes a higher minimum wage.

In conclusion, Governor Obaseki reiterated his commitment to improving the welfare and well-being of workers in Edo State, highlighting the state government's investment in infrastructure and initiatives aimed at enhancing the lives of workers.
