Former Massachusetts City Councilor and Fugitive, Wilmer Puello-Mota, Joins Russia's War Effort in Ukraine

Wilmer Puello-Mota, a former Massachusetts city councilor who fled the U.S. earlier this year over a child pornography charge, has surfaced in Russia, where he is reportedly fighting for the Kremlin in its war with Ukraine. Puello-Mota, also a former Massachusetts National Guardsman, was captured on newly surfaced footage inside a Russian enlistment center, where he appeared to sign up to join the war effort.

In the video, Puello-Mota is seen in an enlistment location with a portrait of Russian President Vladimir Putin in the background, according to the Guardian. The region's official Telegram channel posted a video showing an American signing a military contract at the center in Khanty-Mansiysk, reportedly referring to Puello-Mota.

Puello-Mota, 28, expressed his desire to become a Russian citizen in an interview with Ugra-TV, as reported by the Daily Beast. His legal troubles began in 2020 when authorities found naked photos of a 17-year-old girl on his cell phone. He was charged with child pornography and has also been accused of obstruction of the judicial system, forgery, and counterfeiting for allegedly presenting fake documents to the Massachusetts Air National Guard.
