Kano State Censorship Board Bans Films Promoting Cross-Dressing and Thuggery

The Kano State Censorship Board has issued directives banning movies that depict or endorse cross-dressing and thuggery in the state. The Executive Secretary of the board, Abba El-Mustapha, made the announcement during a briefing with journalists on Wednesday, April 3, following a meeting with stakeholders from the Kannywood industry.

In a statement released by the board's information officer, Abdullahi Sani Sulaiman, it was mentioned that the decision to ban such films stemmed from public outcry, prompting the need to address the production of movies suspected of promoting criminal activities and deviant behaviors among youths.

El-Mustapha emphasized the importance of preserving the customs, norms, and values of the society, stating, "it is high time to fish out any film that may demoralize our customs, norms, and values in the name of reaching popularity, viewers, or business making."

The general public was urged to provide relevant information to the Board regarding any film or publication believed to be in violation of the law. A one-month deadline
