A newborn baby in Paraguay reportedly "came back to life" after being sprinkled with holy water at her wake in front of stunned relatives.
The baby girl was born prematurely to her 21-year-old mother, who was only 32 weeks along, and was taken to the hospital last Friday due to breathing problems. Doctors advised delivering the premature baby as both the mother and daughter were at risk due to the mother's lack of oxygen.
Following an emergency caesarean section, the family received news that the baby girl had passed away. They collected a death certificate and prepared for a funeral, but during the wake, her uncle noticed the baby move her head after being sprinkled with holy water.
The father, Ignacio Medina Vega, recounted the moment: "When the uncle arrived to say goodbye to her, he saw the baby was moving her head and was breathing. Then we went to look and we could see her little heart beating."
The family rushed the baby back to the hospital, where doctors placed her in an incubator in intensive care. The baby, named Milagros de Jesús (Miracle of Jesus) by her parents, is now back in the hospital, where doctors have given her a "very reserved prognosis."
Hospital officials are investigating why she was declared dead, considering the possibility of catalepsy, a condition that can mimic death with a lack of response to stimuli and loss of consciousness.
