Former Rivers State Governor and current Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, has disclosed that he no longer shares a smooth relationship with his predecessor, Peter Odili, due to "political differences."
Wike, who governed the oil-rich South-South state from May 2015 to May 2023, made this known during a chat with journalists in Abuja on Tuesday. He explained that while he had previously described Odili as his political father and leader, their current political paths have diverged.
“As it is today, politically, we don’t have a good relationship. We don’t work together," Wike stated. When asked about the reasons for the rift, he simply cited "some political differences."
Despite the strained political relationship, Wike emphasized that he still considers Odili a father figure. He clarified that their current stance does not diminish the respect he has for Odili.
While Wike did not elaborate on the specifics of the "political differences," the rift might be linked to the ongoing political crisis in Rivers State involving Governor Siminalayi Fubara, who is facing impeachment threats by the state House of Assembly.
Wike also criticized some leaders of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Rivers State, including Abiye Sekibo, Uche Secondus, Celestine Omehia, and Austin Opara, whom he referred to as "political buccaneers" for declaring support for Fubara.
According to Wike, these individuals are "expired politicians" who are no longer relevant in the party. He maintained that Secondus was no longer a member of the PDP, as his suspension was upheld by the court.
The rift between Wike and Odili, as well as the larger political dynamics in Rivers State, underscores the complexities of political relationships and power dynamics within the PDP.
