Oyo State Governor Seyi Makinde has disclosed that the Corporate Affairs Commission (CAC) certificate of the mining company implicated in the Bodija explosion revealed foreign names as owners. During an interview with Channels TV, the governor provided updates on the situation, confirming that the death toll from the blast had risen to three, with one additional victim passing away on January 17.
Makinde mentioned that 60 out of the 77 hospitalized individuals have been discharged, and efforts are underway to identify the victims and uncover more details about the company involved. Emphasizing that the incident is related to illegal mining and not insurgency, the governor assured transparency in the investigation. He identified an individual of interest, urging security agents to invite the person for questioning.
In response to the incident, Makinde expressed plans to seek presidential approval for miners to store explosives with the military. Additionally, he mentioned signing an executive order in the coming days to enforce this measure and enhance safety regulations in the mining sector. The governor emphasized his commitment to transparency and urged the people of the state to trust his administration
