Nigerian Government Warns Against Ransom Payments to Kidnappers

The Federal Government of Nigeria has issued a warning against the payment of ransom to kidnappers and bandits. Minister of Defence, Muhammadu Badaru, conveyed this message during a press briefing after the Federal Executive Council meeting in Abuja on Wednesday, January 17. Badaru emphasized that paying ransoms would only empower the culprits, encouraging them to demand more and compromising public safety.

In response to the escalating security concerns, President Bola Tinubu has directed security agencies to intensify efforts in apprehending and eliminating criminal elements in society. Badaru shared that concerted efforts are underway to address the challenges, particularly in regions like the suburbs of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Kaduna, and Niger states. He highlighted ongoing security operations in the northwest and parts of the north central as factors influencing the movement of bandits.

The government is committed to tackling the root causes of the issue, pushing for a comprehensive approach to curb criminal activities and enhance public safety.
