Lagos State is poised to establish a medical university aimed at enhancing the training of healthcare professionals and addressing the challenge of brain drain in the health sector.
Governor Sanwo-Olu made this announcement during the inauguration of the Femi Gbajabiamila General Hospital in Surulere, Lagos, facilitated by the Chief of Staff to the President, Mr. Femi Gbajabiamila.
The governor highlighted that the collaborative effort with the Federal Government aims to have the medical university operational before the end of 2024.
Emphasizing the strategic importance of the initiative, he outlined the goal of scaling up training aggressively to address healthcare needs and curb the departure of medical personnel from the country.
The objective is to graduate between 1,000 and 1,500 doctors annually, contributing to talent retention and providing top-notch facilities to retain skilled professionals within the state. This initiative is seen as a proactive response to the concerning trend of healthcare workers migrating for better opportunities abroad.
