NSCDC Dismantles Illegal Oil Refining Sites in Rivers State, Thwarts Oil Thieves

The Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) reported that its personnel dismantled four illegal oil refining sites in Cawthome Channel One, located in Degema Local Government Area of Rivers State.

According to NSCDC spokesperson Olufemi Ayodele, the corps acted on intelligence gathered by its marine unit, which revealed that suspected oil thieves had vandalized facilities, including pipes belonging to Sahara Oil. The criminals aimed to establish an illegal refining site after stealing crude oil.

In a statement issued in Port Harcourt, the state capital, Ayodele highlighted the NSCDC's commitment to combating illegal oil bunkering activities, pipeline vandalism, and illicit dealings in petroleum products. The marine unit, acting under the directive of NSCDC Commandant-General Dr. Ahmed Audu, thwarted the operations of local refinery owners in Cawthome Channel One.

The statement noted that the success of the Marine Unit was based on credible intelligence about illegal oil bunkering activities in the Damakiri Area. The suspects had vandalized Sahara Oil wellheads and pipes, siphoning crude oil to establish a local refining site. Upon spotting the marine operatives, the suspects fled the scene.

In response, the NSCDC State Commandant ordered the massive destruction of materials used in the illegal oil bunkering activities, resulting in the demolition of over four different refining stations. The statement emphasized the NSCDC's commitment to maintaining zero tolerance for economic sabotage and protecting critical national assets and infrastructure on both land and waterways.
