Court Orders Lesbian Woman to Co-Parent Baby Conceived Through IVF with Ex-Wife

A lesbian woman, Nicole Junior, 43, has been ordered by the court to allow her ex-wife, Chanel Glover, 41, to co-parent a baby conceived through IVF, which both women had jointly funded. The legal battle ensued after Glover allegedly prevented Junior from seeing the baby, despite their shared investment in the IVF treatment, costing $30,000.

The couple, both trained attorneys residing in Philadelphia, initially embarked on the journey of IVF with excitement upon learning of Glover's pregnancy in January 2022. Junior actively supported Glover throughout the process, accompanying her to medical appointments and co-signing necessary documents.

However, their relationship deteriorated around five-and-a-half months into the pregnancy, leading to Junior relocating to Seattle for writing residencies. Glover subsequently decided to abandon their initial co-parenting plan and pursue single motherhood, prompting Junior to file a petition seeking recognition as a legal parent.

Following a contentious court battle and allegations of emotional abuse from Glover, the judge ruled in favor of Junior, recognizing her as a legal parent entitled to co-parental rights. The ruling was upheld by the Pennsylvania Superior Court in December 2023, citing the clear intent of both parties to co-parent.

Glover, distraught by the decision, has appealed to the Pennsylvania Supreme Court in an attempt to overturn the ruling. Meanwhile, custody hearings are pending, with Junior contesting Glover's claims of absence and expressing her unhappiness at missing the early moments of their child's life.

The case has drawn attention to the concept of "intent-based parentage" and its implications for LGBTQ+ families, with legal experts anticipating its impact on similar cases in the future.
