The Bola Tinubu-led Federal Government has urged the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) and the Trade Union Congress (TUC) to reconsider their decision and refrain from initiating a nationwide strike.
Mohammed Idris, the Minister of Information and National Orientation, made the appeal while addressing reporters in Abuja. He emphasized that it was not in the government's best interest for labour to persist with strike actions.
The organised Labour had issued a 14-day ultimatum to the federal government on February 8, citing the hardships faced by Nigerians. In response, Minister Idris assured that the Federal Government is committed to fulfilling its promises to workers and will honor agreements reached with the unions.
Idris stated:
"We appeal to labour to always engage in constructive dialogue with the government. Prolonged strikes are not beneficial to either party. The government is dedicated to keeping its commitments. If there are concerns that the NLC and TUC wish to address, we encourage them to engage in discussions with the government. We are willing to listen to their grievances and work towards a mutually beneficial resolution.
We urge labour to return to the negotiating table so that we can address any outstanding issues in the agreements that have been previously signed."
The government's appeal underscores the importance of dialogue and cooperation in resolving labour disputes and ensuring the well-being of workers and the nation as a whole.
