The church's auditorium, situated at 7 Surulere Industrial Road, off Adeniyi Jones in Ikeja, Lagos, was completely engulfed in flames just hours before the commencement of the church’s annual conference, Mercy Conference 2024. The extensive auditorium, capable of accommodating thousands of worshippers, suffered significant damage.
Recounting the incident, the lead pastor of the church, with a solemn expression, shared how he witnessed the devastating fire consume everything before his eyes.
“I came here this (Wednesday) morning, and everything was going on well; we were setting up. All of a sudden, we started hearing something up there, and there was fire.”
The pastor mentioned that the fire service was called, but regrettably, they had to watch as everything was completely destroyed. Despite the loss, he expressed gratitude that no lives were lost during the incident.
In a video, with the backdrop of the charred remnants of the once-fancy auditorium adorned with colorful lighting and thousands of steel chairs, the pastor said, “It’s a painful experience, no doubt, but all things work together for good.”
The Mercy Conference, scheduled to take place from January 31, 2024, through February 4, 2024, was expected to feature prominent Pentecostal preachers such as Joshua Selman, Isaac Oyedepo, Godman Akinlabi, and Yemi Davids. Renowned musicians like Nathaniel Bassey, Dunsin Oyekan, Victoria Orenze, and Moses Bliss were also billed to minister at the conference.
Despite the unfortunate incident, the pastor affirmed that “we believe in God, and we are still going to go ahead with the conference.”
