The authorities of Michael Okpara University of Agriculture, Umudike, Abia State, have announced the indefinite shutdown of the institution due to protests by its students.
The protests erupted over a hike in tuition fees, with students alleging that they were expelled from examination halls for failing to pay the increased fees. A video circulating online shows students being forced out of an examination hall.
However, the situation escalated when some troublemakers hijacked the protest, causing damage to the university's property. This included an attack on the Vice Chancellor's official vehicle and other officials.
In response to the unrest, the Vice Chancellor, Prof. Maduebibisi Iwe, declared the suspension of all academic activities at the institution indefinitely.
In a statement, the university management explained, "To safeguard life and property on campus, the university management, on behalf of the Senate, has ordered an indefinite shutdown of the university."
All students have been instructed to vacate the university premises immediately or by no later than 5:00 pm on Tuesday, February 6, 2024.
