NBA to Debut Glass Court for All-Star Weekend in Indianapolis

For the first time in NBA history, part of the All-Star weekend in Indianapolis will feature games played on a state-of-the-art, full video LED court installed at Lucas Oil Stadium, the league announced on Monday.

The entire All-Star Saturday Night lineup, including the skills competition, the 3-point contest, the slam dunk competition, and the shooting matchup between Stephen Curry and Sabrina Ionescu, will take place on the glass floor on Feb. 17. Additionally, the celebrity game on Feb. 16 will also be played on the LED court. However, the actual All-Star Game itself on Feb. 18 will remain on a traditional wooden court.

The innovative court, developed by the German company ASB GlassFloor, has previously been utilized in events by FIBA, the sport’s governing body. FIBA approved the usage of LED glass flooring at top-tier competitions in 2022. While the exact cost of the court was not disclosed by the NBA, it was stated that it is more expensive than a traditional wooden surface.

Carlton Myers, an NBA senior vice president overseeing live production and entertainment, highlighted the enhanced capabilities of the glass court, including interactive and reactionary graphics that can change in real-time based on the action on the floor. The NBA has been exploring ways to incorporate this technology for some time, and testing was conducted by Andre Iguodala of the National Basketball Players Association and Joe Dumars, the NBA’s executive vice president for basketball operations, last week to ensure safety and performance standards.
