President Bola Tinubu: Nigeria's Economy Is Not Distressed, but in a Transition Period

During the 16th edition of the Leadership 2023 conference and Awards in Abuja, President Bola Tinubu, represented by the Minister of Information and National Orientation, Mohammed Idris, addressed the state of Nigeria's economy. He emphasized that while the country faces challenges, it is not helpless and is on a path of transition towards a more sustainable economy.

President Tinubu challenged the notion that Nigeria's economy is in distress, stating that distress implies helplessness, which is not the case. He acknowledged the challenging times but highlighted the unprecedented opportunities to reset the course and build a new economy away from previous practices of rent-seeking and waste.

The President cited examples of positive economic indicators, such as the reduction in petrol subsidies leading to a drop in petrol imports by 50 percent, resulting in increased revenues for the government. He mentioned the approval of special intervention funds to support Nigerian businesses, including grants and loans for traders, transport workers, ICT businesses, creatives, and artisans.

Furthermore, President Tinubu highlighted initiatives in the agricultural sector, food security, and infrastructure development. He mentioned attracting $30 billion in Foreign Direct Investment (FDI) commitments into various sectors of the economy and noted the growth in the Nigerian Stock Exchange All Share Index (ASI) to its highest ever level.

In conclusion, President Tinubu urged Nigerians to have patience and support the ongoing reforms, emphasizing that the country is on the right track towards a brighter future. He called on the media to report not only the challenges but also the solutions and opportunities present in Nigeria's economy.
