TETFund Invests N23 Billion in 912 Research Projects, Aims to Enhance Industry Linkages

The Tertiary Education Trust Fund (TETFund) has disclosed that it has allocated over N23 billion to support 912 research projects nationwide. Dr. Hadiza Ismail, TETFund's Assistant Director for Research and Development (R&D), made this known during a validation workshop on "Strengthening Research and Innovation Funding Agencies in West Africa" in Abuja on Monday, March 25.

Dr. Ismail highlighted TETFund's commitment to establishing a science granting council in Nigeria. She stated, "So far, the Fund has spent over N23 billion on about 912 research projects that have been sponsored." However, she emphasized the need to link these research projects with industry to generate viable outcomes for national development.

Professor Nicholas Ozor, Executive Director of the African Technology Policy Studies Network (ATPS), explained that the workshop aimed to support a project focused on enhancing national research councils in six West African countries. He noted that Nigeria faces a challenge due to the absence of a well-recognized national research and innovation funding agency.

The workshop seeks to address this gap and create a platform for greater collaboration between research projects and industry, ultimately driving Nigeria's progress through innovation and research.
