Hundreds of civil society organizations (CSOs) protested in Lagos against the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission's (EFCC) handling of the case involving former Governor of Kogi State, Yahaya Bello. The activists criticized the EFCC for declaring Bello wanted without providing any documentary evidence of an official invitation and subjecting him to media trials despite a court order protecting him.
Led by the chairman of the Centre for Anti-Corruption and Open Leadership (CACOL), Debo Adeniran, the protesters called for respect for fundamental human rights and the rule of law. They accused the EFCC of unprofessionalism and playing to the gallery without legal substance.
The activists condemned EFCC Chairman Ola Olukoyede for admitting to putting a call through to Bello without formally inviting him. They called for EFCC to be held in contempt of court for disobeying the court order.
The coalition stated that EFCC's actions were alarming and called for due process to be followed. They emphasized the need for EFCC to respect and obey lawful court orders, stating that until an order is vacated or appealed, it must be respected.
