Former Spanish FA president Luis Rubiales has denied allegations of sexual assault after being arrested amid an ongoing corruption probe unrelated to the incident. Rubiales, 46, was arrested on Wednesday morning in connection with alleged financial irregularities during his time as head of the Spanish FA, including a deal to hold the Spanish Super Cup in Saudi Arabia.
The arrest comes as Rubiales faces potential legal trouble for a kiss he gave footballer Jenni Hermoso after Spain's Women's World Cup final win against England last August. Spanish prosecutors are seeking a two-and-a-half-year prison sentence for Rubiales for coercion and sexual assault over the kiss.
Rubiales has spoken out in an interview with Spanish broadcaster La Sexta, criticizing the judge who charged him with coercion and sexual assault. He stated, "I cannot understand that anyone could think this was a sexual assault," and denied any coercion, claiming he only spoke briefly with Hermoso.
Public prosecutors involved in the case have requested a two-and-a-half-year prison sentence for Rubiales, with a year for sexual assault and 18 months for coercion linked to his alleged attempts to get Hermoso to speak out in his defense after the incident. The full interview with Rubiales is set to air at 9:30pm BST, with excerpts already released by La Sexta.
