Ric Hassani Criticizes Decline in Quality of Nigerian Music

Nigerian singer Ric Hassani recently shared his views on the current state of music produced by Nigerians, particularly within the Afrobeats genre. Hassani expressed his belief that there has been a significant drop in the quality of Afrobeats music over the years.

During an appearance on the Channels TV programme, Rubbin’ Minds with Ebuka, Hassani remarked that while hit songs from previous years were of high quality, the current hit songs are not meeting the same standards.

He noted, "Afrobeats is Nigerian music. Our artists are in the top 10, and I feel like because of that, the quality of music might start dropping because more people want to get in. So, the quality is really dropping."

Hassani went on to compare the nature of hit songs from the past, which he described as "serious music," to the current trend where he feels "almost anybody is just coming in." According to him, many of the current hit songs in Nigeria do not qualify as very good music, a departure from the past. He attributed this decline in quality to the long-standing dominance of Nigerian music, suggesting that artists are now releasing music without much regard for its artistic merit, simply because they can afford to do so.
