Bode George Urges Urgent Action on Escalating Insecurity in Nigeria and Calls for Restructuring

Former Deputy National Chairman of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP), Chief Bode George, issued a warning on January 22, expressing concern that the recent surge in kidnappings and insecurity in Nigeria is pushing citizens to their limits. George argued that any additional pressure could lead to disintegration and called on the Bola Tinubu-led administration to address the escalating insecurity by advocating for the restructuring of the country.

In a statement, George criticized the current government, asserting that it has failed Nigerians. He highlighted the urgent need for the government to prioritize national security, as the prevailing insecurity hampers economic growth and international investment. George specifically pointed to the recent incidents of violence, such as the killing of over 200 people in Plateau State during the Christmas season, and the widespread abduction of citizens.

George questioned the government's lack of action in eliminating the security challenges and emphasized the necessity of developing a well-coordinated security plan. He expressed distress over the rising cases of kidnapping for ransom and urged leaders to take meaningful steps to restore peace and stability.

Additionally, George highlighted the economic challenges facing the country, including high unemployment rates, chronic hunger, and inflation. He called on the government to engage the growing population of unemployed youths and emphasized the importance of immediate relief measures for vulnerable members of society.

In addressing the broader issue, George advocated for the restructuring of Nigeria, urging the federal government to devolve power to states for more effective governance. He argued that development should be bottom-up, with governors being closer to the people and better equipped to address local needs. George cited the example of California in the United States, emphasizing that if it were a sovereign nation, it would have a larger GDP than many African countries, showcasing the potential benefits of decentralized governance.
