The Federal Government has begun the process of paying the withheld salaries of academics who are members of the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU). Prof. Gbolahan Bolarin, the ASUU chairperson at the Federal University of Technology, Minna, confirmed that payments have started rolling in.
This development follows President Bola Tinubu's approval in October 2023 to release four months' worth of salaries out of the eight months that were withheld from ASUU workers. These salaries were held back during the administration of former President Muhammadu Buhari, who implemented a 'No Work, No Pay policy' against university-based unions that participated in an eight-month strike in 2022.
