After some viewers raised concerns about a sex scene in the film "Miller's Girl" due to the age gap between the actors, the movie's intimacy coordinator is addressing the issue.
"Miller's Girl," written and directed by Jade Halley Bartlett, follows a writing student named Cairo, played by Jenna Ortega, who embarks on a creative journey with her teacher, portrayed by Martin Freeman, after being assigned a project that complicates their relationship.
In response to social media discussions about the scene, intimacy coordinator Kristina Arjona emphasized that both Ortega, 21, and Freeman, 52, were comfortable during filming and that their boundaries were respected.
Arjona stated in an interview with The Daily Mail that extensive communication took place to ensure Ortega's comfort level and that she had agency over her decisions. She highlighted the importance of continuous consent, particularly in situations involving a significant age difference between actors.
The actors discussed the level of nudity and had the option to change their minds on the day of filming, according to Arjona. She stressed the need for open dialogue and sensitivity, especially given the sensitive nature of the subject matter.
Freeman previously praised Ortega's talent and professionalism, describing her as "amazing" to work with. He expressed admiration for the script's complexity and its ability to spark meaningful conversations.
While acknowledging that the film addresses uncomfortable themes, Freeman emphasized its relevance in today's discourse on relationships and power dynamics.
Reps for Ortega and Freeman have not commented on the matter.
