An unidentified commercial bus driver died after setting himself ablaze on Tuesday, February 15. His death happened while was protesting the seizure of his vehicle by operatives of the task force from the Lagos State Ministry of Transportation.
The driver was driving along the Murtala Muhammed International Airport Road area connecting Ajao Estate when his and some other shuttles were compounded by the taskforce team.
According to eyewitnesses, the driver was furious that his vehicle had been seized. He then reached out for a keg of fuel and poured it on himself, and then set himself ablaze.
He was later confirmed dead.
CSP Adekunle Ajisebutu, the spokesperson of the state police command, confirmed the incident and said the state Commissioner of Police, Abiodun Alabi, had ordered an investigation into the incident.
“The information we got was that there was resistance when task force from the ministry of transportation went for enforcement.
No policeman set any vehicle ablaze; policemen attached to the Ajao Estate Police Division were not involved in what happened. However, the Commissioner of Police has ordered an investigation into the incident.” he said
