The judge overseeing Navarro’s case today dismissed the former Trump adviser’s claim that his prosecution was politically motivated. During the sentencing hearing, US District Judge Amit Mehta criticized Navarro for suggesting that the case was politically motivated, stating, “You are not a victim. You are not the object of a political prosecution.
These are the circumstances of your own making.” The judge imposed a $9,500 fine along with the sentence. Navarro swiftly appealed the case to the DC Circuit Court of Appeals, and his attorneys plan to raise issues related to his claim that he didn’t comply with the subpoena due to Trump invoking executive privilege. Each count carries a mandatory minimum sentence of one month in prison, with prosecutors seeking six months for each count concurrently and a $200,000 fine.
Prosecutors argued that Navarro, like Capitol rioters, prioritized politics over the rule of law by stonewalling Congress’s investigation. Navarro's attorneys are seeking no more than six months of probation for each count and asked for a stay on the sentence during the appeal.
