A British rancher in Brazil, Robert Witchell, aged 59, has accused his wife of orchestrating his kidnapping and subsequent illegal detention in a rehab clinic in Caldas Novas, Goias State.
The incident reportedly occurred after Witchell refused to pay for his wife's family to fly out and spend Christmas with them. Witchell claims he was forcibly taken off the street by four men and driven to the Novo Dia rehab clinic, where he was held against his will for a month.
He managed to escape the clinic and sought help from the police. The clinic has been shut down, and its manager faces charges of kidnapping and false imprisonment. Witchell alleges that his wife had signed the order for his detention due to a disagreement over Christmas plans. The investigation is ongoing.
