Nigerian governors have refuted claims made by Senate President Godswill Akpabio that the Federal Government disbursed N1.08tn to states to address the food crisis. Akpabio stated in a plenary session that an unverified report indicated that each state government received an additional N30bn from the Federal Inland Revenue Service (FIRS) to mitigate inflation and high food costs.
However, Vice-Chairman of the Nigeria Governors' Forum (NGF) and Oyo State Governor Seyi Makinde denied Akpabio's claim. Speaking on behalf of the state governors, Makinde stated that no such money was disbursed to any state. He emphasized that FIRS cannot give money to states, as all revenues go into the federation account and are distributed to all tiers of government.
Makinde stressed the need for transparency and accountability, noting that politicians should not play politics with such serious issues. He emphasized the importance of engaging with the people and amending policies that are not working. Other state governors have also denied receiving the alleged N30bn for food security.
