NLC President Criticizes Government's Response to Food Insecurity

In a recent interview with Arise News, Comrade Joe Ajaero, President of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), expressed his dismay at the Federal Government's approach to addressing food insecurity in the country. Ajaero labeled the provision of grains as palliatives as an insult to Nigerians, emphasizing the need for more substantial measures to tackle hunger and poverty.

Ajaero highlighted the disconnect between government actions and the pressing needs of the people, stating, "I feel sad when we talk of federal government giving people grains as if we are giving grains to pigeons and all these other birds." He stressed the importance of trust in government initiatives and urged for more effective policies to alleviate the suffering of Nigerians.

The interview also touched upon the upcoming minimum wage review, with Ajaero raising concerns about the adequacy of the proposed wage increase. With inflation and the depreciation of the naira impacting living costs, the NLC is pushing for a wage hike that reflects the current economic realities faced by Nigerian workers.

Ajaero questioned the government's commitment to addressing labor issues, pointing out delays in initiating negotiations and the composition of the minimum wage committee. He expressed skepticism about the effectiveness of the committee's work, particularly given the inclusion of individuals with questionable track records on labor rights.

As the expiration of the old minimum wage approaches, Ajaero urged for urgent action to ensure fair compensation for workers. He emphasized the importance of factoring in the rising cost of living and called for a collaborative effort to address labor rights and economic justice issues in Nigeria.

Stay tuned for further updates on the NLC's efforts to advocate for the rights of Nigerian workers and combat food insecurity in the country.
