At least two individuals have been reported dead, and two others hospitalized after consuming self-made herbal drinks in Kogi.
The tragic incident occurred on Tuesday evening, February 6, when four individuals decided to experiment by combining various fruits and roots in Isanlu, Yagba East Local Government Area of the state.
According to reports, youths in the community combined Gegemu and Roots to create a herbal concoction (agbo) in an attempt to get high.
Regrettably, the concoction led to the death of a 62-year-old man, known as Okiribo, and a 45-year-old named Samuel Omo-Folorunsho. Additionally, one individual identified as Shola Pempe and another youth were hospitalized at ECWA Hospital, Makutu, according to the News Agency of Nigeria.
Confirming the incident, the traditional ruler, Oba Moses Etombi, Agbana of Isanlu, described it as "tragic" and "very unfortunate."
He expressed disbelief that the herbs commonly used for the treatment of ailments like piles could result in the early demise of community members.
"It is unbelievable that the herbs that we have been using for treatment of piles could send our beloved ones to their early graves," the traditional ruler remarked.
According to Oba Moses Etombi, the individuals consumed more than two liters of the concoction, which severely affected their health.
The Kogi Police Command's Public Relations Officer, SP Williams Ovye-Aya, also confirmed the incident and advised youths against drug consumption.
