Nigeria Police Force Reiterates Ban on POS Machines in Police Facilities

The Nigeria Police Force has reaffirmed its ban on the use of point-of-sale (POS) machines and other electronic mobile money transaction devices within police stations and facilities nationwide. This decision comes in response to public concerns about alleged illegal transactions involving POS operators and collusion with certain police personnel.

In a statement issued by the force's spokesperson, ACP Olumuyiwa Adejobi, on March 4, the ban aims to preserve the integrity and security of police operations, prevent corrupt practices, and deter criminal intrusion disguised as legitimate transactions. Adejobi emphasized that despite previous directives, some commands and formations have continued to disregard the ban.

The Inspector-General of Police (IGP) warns that any violation of this ban will result in severe sanctions on the leadership of the affected commands and formations. The use of electronic payment devices within police facilities poses risks such as compromising sensitive information, financial irregularities, and facilitating illicit activities. Therefore, strict compliance with the directive is non-negotiable.

The IGP urges all officers and personnel to adhere to this directive without exception. Any police officer or POS operator found contravening the order or colluding in illicit financial transactions will face disciplinary and criminal action in accordance with the law. Command and formation leadership will also be held accountable for any violations.
